Syedi Khoj bin Malak QR

On the fifth of Jamada al-Aakhar Syedna Dawood bin Ajab Shah RA arrived in Kapadwanj about which Syedi Khoj bin Malak QR writes that Syedna left Umreth on the 1st of the month, a Monday. Umreth to Kapadwanj is 12 qaws and after 2 qaws Syedna bid farewell to all those people from Umreth who were accompanying him. They were all given tashreefaat.

Mumineen from Kapadwanj had come in their carriages to receive Syedna and from here he proceeded to Maysat where he prayed zohr and asr. Syedna then took shelter beneath the trees there and the people of Kapadwanj served refreshment including some paan. It was the hot season and after remaining under the cooling trees for some time Syedna boarded a carriage to reach Andnaade where Syedi Khoj had already sent forward his brother Ameenji where he had sprayed water and kept sugar and curd. No sooner did Syedna reach but the sugar and curd were proffered from which Syedna took some of the curd.

Syedna continued onwards and reached the pool of Mamabhaanj where all of the Mumineen of Kapadwanj gathered in droves bringing gifts of coconuts and salaam ?? From here Syedna went on to the pool of Wardmaan which is within the hadd of Kapadwanj and here he prayed the maghrib namaaz. After maghrib the people of Kapadwanj beseeched Syedna to pray four rakaats for isha and thus intend to stay in Kapadwanj for ten days to which Syedna first said no but when they asked him once again he acceded and prayed four rakaats for the isha namaaz.

Mumineen had desired that Syedna enter the town during the daytime to great fanfare but Syedna preferred to enter during the evening where he was received impassionately by the crowds as he proceeded to the home of Shaikh Mohammed ibn Qaid Khan where he was to stay and was immediately served with dinner upon arriving. Meanwhile, Syedna Dawood bin Qutub Shah RA and others were hosted at the home of Miya Khojanji ibn Hasanji.

On the fourth of Jamada al-Akhar Syedna bade farewell to leaders of Haalaar before sending a delegation including Syedi Khoj and his son Ibrahim among others to Ahmedabad to call a group of community leaders to Kapadwanj where they arrived in time to attend a dinner hosted by Nizam ibn Ali on the 8th of the month. Additionally many others had come from Vadodara and Umreth.

Syedna was visited by people from all communities, Muslim and Hindu and on a Wednesday Syedna visited the cemetery where he started with he grave of Miya Nizam Khan ibn Tayyeb of whom he spoke. Syedi Khoj has written of him in his risala, Bazr al-Bidayat. He was the student of Maulana Mamuji saheb who had taken an oath that if any of his students were to reach the level of Taweel ul-Daaim then he would undertake a pilgrimage to the radiant cities of Makkah and Medina. It was a vow he fulfilled and went onto Yemen where he passed away.

Syedna Dawood RA continued with paying respects at various graves including Miya Nizam Khan Al-Shaheed who was killed on the road to Ahmedabad as well as that of Miya Nizam’s father Miya Tayyeb. Syedna continued with each grave where the Mumineen would point out their relation of brother or father or mother and Syedna would pray mercy upon them until he reached the graves of martyrs and that of Maulaya Dawood Shah ibn Raja and Maulaya Firoz bhai. Then he came to the grave of Dawoodji Burhan for whom Syedna said he was a generous man who would purchase all the fruits and hay and then distribute it free to the people. After Dawoodji Syedna went to the grave of Nuhji bhai Haji who was a man of piety who stayed awake in prayer at night and fasted during the day and so Syedna continued until his body was perspiring, but while those around him tired, Syedna did not.

Syedi Khoj lists the names of several of the graves in his risala including that of Shaikh Nuruddin ibn Idris saheb whose grave enemies destroyed in the time of Muzaffar and was then rebuilt. Most of the people of Kapadwanj are descendants of the pioneers whose graves are to be found here. Having done ziyarat of all the graves Syedna sat below a mango tree, had some water and rested a while. Syedna then mounted a carriage and with great pomp and ceremony, crowded by Mumineen, reached the city.

They went through the area of Wunkerlog where they passed the homes of the elders and scholars and the city judge and governor’s palaces were passed as he reached his residence. A crowd had gathered in the street to get a glimpse of Syedna and the poor who had assembled were showered with coins the news of which spread near and far. Poets from surrounding places such as Lunavada assembled to write his praises and fulfill their wishes.
